Jacoba Olivero
Jacoba was born in La Isabella, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. At an early age, she knew she wanted to work with people. Jacoba studied education and psychology and began working as a teacher in the late 1970s. In 1982 she emigrated to the United States.
“When I moved, I did not know any English and moved to a country and a city where I did not know anyone besides my husband’s brothers. We lived in a small apartment in Lawrence and life was difficult during this time because I could not communicate with anyone,” Jacoba remembers.
After a few years, Jacoba began taking English classes at Northern Essex Community College and soon was able to find a job as a housekeeper with a big company and eventually became a manager. “Life was hard and often I needed to work more than one job just to get by … From the beginning, I knew that in order to succeed my children needed to have a good education. I instilled in them the idea that through hard work and effort all things are possible. I also taught them to love, respect, and help those in need in our community both in the United States and in the Dominican Republic.”
In 2010, Jacoba participated in a program offered by LCW and became a volunteer. She is now a full-time student at NECC studying English and on the road to becoming a counselor. Being part of the LCW network has offered Jacoba the opportunity to connect with the community, promote change, and make Lawrence a better city. She was elected to the LCW Board in 2017.

Jacoba nació en La Isabella, Puerto Plata, República Dominicana. Desde muy joven supo que quería trabajar con la gente. Jacoba estudió educación y psicología, y comenzó a trabajar como maestra a finales de la década de 1970. En 1982, emigró a los Estados Unidos. "Cuando me mudé, no sabía nada de inglés y llegué a un país y a una ciudad donde no conocía a nadie, salvo a los hermanos de mi esposo. Vivíamos en un pequeño apartamento en Lawrence, y la vida fue difícil durante esa época porque no podía comunicarme con nadie," recuerda Jacoba.
Después de unos años, Jacoba comenzó a tomar clases de inglés en el Northern Essex Community College y pronto logró conseguir un empleo como encargada de limpieza en una gran empresa, donde con el tiempo llegó a ocupar el cargo de supervisora. "La vida era dura y, a menudo, tenía que desempeñar más de un trabajo solo para salir adelante... Desde el principio, supe que, para tener éxito, mis hijos necesitaban recibir una buena educación. Les inculqué la idea de que, mediante el trabajo arduo y el esfuerzo, todo es posible. También les enseñé a amar, respetar y ayudar a quienes lo necesitan en nuestra comunidad, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en la República Dominicana."
En 2010, Jacoba participó en un programa ofrecido por LCW y se convirtió en voluntaria. Actualmente es estudiante a tiempo completo en el NECC, donde estudia inglés y avanza en su camino para convertirse en consejera. Formar parte de la red de LCW le ha brindado a Jacoba la oportunidad de conectar con la comunidad, promover el cambio y hacer de Lawrence una ciudad mejor. Fue elegida miembro de la Junta Directiva de LCW en 2017.
